Pennsylvania's camp at Gettysburg was one of the tent communities set up for the 1913 semicentennial, when aging Union and Confederate veterans returned to the battlefield for a reunion. The men lived under canvas in the weeks around July 1, marking fifty years since the three-day fight that turned back the Confederate invasion of the North. Reunion events drew tens of thousands of former soldiers, along with families, officials and visitors. The gatherings were as much about reconciliation as remembrance, and photographs like this one show how the state organized its veterans as a community of survivors.
