This view belongs to the anniversary observances held at Gettysburg, where the battlefield became a place for remembering as much as fighting. The best-known commemoration came in 1913, when the fiftieth anniversary of the battle drew thousands of aging Union and Confederate veterans to the field for a reunion, with tent camps set up across the grounds. Later anniversaries, including the seventy-fifth in 1938, brought new monuments, speeches and crowds, and the memorial landscape grew as each generation added its own markers. Pictures from these gatherings show how the battlefield was presented to the public in the decades after the war.
