Gettysburg's anniversary observances drew aging veterans back to the battlefield decades after the fighting of July 1 to 3, 1863, and this view belongs to that tradition of commemoration rather than the battle itself. The most famous gatherings, such as the 1913 reunion marking fifty years since the battle, brought Union and Confederate survivors together in large encampments, with speeches, parades, and visits to the monuments that had been raised across the fields. Such reunions show how the nation's memory of the war shifted over time, from the bitterness of the immediate postwar years toward a reconciliation that often set aside the question of slavery. Looking closely at the crowds, dress, and setting can tell you a good deal about how the anniversary was remembered.
