The record places this view in a Pennsylvania camp on the Gettysburg battlefield during the July 1-3 observances, the era's fiftieth-anniversary commemoration of the 1863 battle. In 1913 tens of thousands of Union and Confederate veterans returned to the town, and many stayed in tent camps set up on the same ground where they had fought. Newspapers at the time widely framed the gathering as a reconciliation between the former enemies, and images like this one document how the old fields became temporary cities of veterans.
