The name on this glass negative is what sets it apart: its sleeve caption identifies an adjutant of the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry as "L. Carter," while the title reads "Lewis Crater," a spelling discrepancy the record leaves unresolved. The picture is dated July 1865, several months after Lee's surrender ended the fighting, when veterans and officers often returned to Gettysburg, where the 1863 battle still marked the town and fields. It is a wet collodion negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose and develop each glass plate quickly. It was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, but that attribution is now uncertain.
