Major George W. Brumm of Company F, 50th Pennsylvania Infantry, poses with his horse in this glass negative made at Gettysburg in July 1865, only a few months after the war ended. The town drew veterans and their officers back to its fields and ridges in those years, and portraits like this one kept their service on record. The caption spells the name as either Brumm or Broom, and Alexander Gardner was once credited with the photograph, though that attribution is no longer accepted. The plate was made by the wet collodion process, which required the glass to be coated, exposed and developed before it dried.
