A wartime officer is the subject here: Lt. Col. Samuel K. Schwenk of the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry, identified on the negative sleeve as photographed in July 1865. The image is a glass wet collodion negative, a process that required plates to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet, and it dominated photography through the 1860s. The Gettysburg in the title is a catalog heading, not a view of the battlefield. Taken a few months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, the portrait records an officer at the close of the war.
