The officers of the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry, photographed in Gettysburg on July 5, 1865, were pictured two years after the armies fought there in early July 1863 and only a few months after Lee's surrender. Group portraits of this kind were often made when units gathered for reunions, mustering out, or memorial visits, so the picture reflects a moment when former soldiers were turning toward remembrance. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the Washington photographer known for his battlefield work, though that attribution is now considered uncertain.
