Taken in July 1865, this glass negative shows Col. William Telford posing with the officers of the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry in Gettysburg, a town that had become a site of remembrance within two years of the battle. The war had ended only a few months earlier, and many regiments were preparing to muster out, which made group portraits like this common. The plate was made with the wet collodion process, which required the glass to be coated and exposed before the emulsion dried. Earlier catalogs credited the picture to Alexander Gardner, known for his 1863 battlefield views, but that attribution has since been revised.
