A wet collodion glass negative records Col. Davis and the staff of the 69th Pennsylvania Infantry at Gettysburg in June 1865, only a few weeks after the Confederate surrender had ended major fighting. The regiment had fought in the Union lines around the town in July 1863, so the portrait was made on ground the men knew well, as the army was demobilizing. Wet collodion plates were fragile, required immediate exposure and development, and were common in the period. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been questioned.
