Shattered trunks and stripped limbs crowd the wooded slope of Culps Hill, a rocky height on the southeastern edge of the Gettysburg battlefield. Union troops held entrenchments on the hill during fighting on July 2 and 3, 1863, and the timber around them was chewed by musket and artillery fire. Made as a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass plates, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Alexander Gardner was formerly credited as its photographer, a attribution that is no longer assumed.
