Taken in 1862, this view looks out from Culp's Hill over Gettysburg, a year before the town became the scene of the great battle of July 1863. The sleeve's handwritten caption reads "Culpeper Hill," though the rise is known as Culp's Hill. The glass negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose the plate before it dried. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is no longer considered certain. Today the quiet fields and town roofs show the ground before the fighting that made Culp's Hill famous.
