Culps Hill, a wooded height on the southeastern flank of the Gettysburg battlefield, is the setting here, and the picture's subject is the cannon kept on its ground nearly six decades after the fighting. The 1927 date places the photograph well into the era when the battlefield was being transformed into a memorial landscape, with monuments, markers and artillery pieces set out to commemorate the July 1863 battle. Culps Hill saw fierce fighting on the evening of July 2 and again on the morning of July 3, when Union troops held the position against Confederate attacks. The stereo card format, popular for tourist viewing in the period, shows how visitors then encountered the battlefield.
