Culp's Hill, on the Union right at Gettysburg, appears here in the woods where Federal soldiers raised their breastworks of earth and logs. Those defenses were the scene of a fierce fight on the morning of July 3, 1863, when Union troops repulsed Confederate attacks to hold the hill. The image survives as a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass negatives, a format that let viewers see the ground in depth through a stereoscope. The plates were once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is uncertain.
