The breastworks on Round Top were earthen and stone defenses that Union soldiers threw up on the wooded hill south of the battlefield's center, which anchored the southern end of the Union line during the fighting of July 2 and 3, 1863. This wet collodion glass negative, made in the weeks after the battle, shows how the fortifications looked once the armies had withdrawn. The image was long credited to Alexander Gardner, the Scottish-born photographer who worked at Gettysburg that summer, though the attribution is now uncertain. Its survival as a stereograph negative makes it useful for studying how the ground was used and how quickly the battlefield became a subject for photographers.
