Few spots on the Gettysburg field saw as much fighting as Round Top, the hill south of town where Union soldiers dug in during the early days of July 1863. This view shows the breastworks they left behind, defenses still standing as the battlefield was being cleared. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose plates on site, and the caption on its sleeve dates the scene to July 1863. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, whose studio documented the battlefield, but that attribution has since been revised.
