Trees on Culps Hill, southeast of Gettysburg, still bear the marks of the fighting there in early July 1863, when Union troops held entrenchments against Confederate attacks. Bullets struck the trunks so often that the woods look splintered and scarred, showing how heavy the musketry was. This picture survives as two glass plates, one for each eye, meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer considered certain.
