A shell's damage to a Confederate soldier is the subject of this stereograph, preserved as a matched pair of glass plates. The negatives are credited to Alexander Gardner, and the record also names James F. Gibson, both of whom worked on the battlefield at Gettysburg in the days after the fighting in early July 1863. Wet collodion plates were slow and fragile, and the paired images were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth. Today the picture stands as a direct record of the battle's cost as well as an early example of photography recording war.
