A Confederate sharpshooter, killed by a shell during the battle, is the subject of this stereograph pair, and the caption on the negative sleeve preserves that account. James F. Gibson made the image in 1863, working with Alexander Gardner's team as they photographed the Gettysburg field in the days after the fighting ended in early July. Each scene was exposed on a wet collodion glass plate, and the two halves were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the body and rocky ground a sense of depth. Scenes of the war dead like this were rare in public view before the conflict, and they helped Americans grasp its human cost.
