Few early photographs of the battle show a dead soldier so plainly, and this one was taken in the rocky ground of Devil's Den, where Confederate sharpshooters had fired from the boulders. The caption on the original negative sleeve reads "Rocks could not save him," and the image appeared in Alexander Gardner's *Photographic Sketch Book of the War* as "Home of a rebel sharpshooter." Gardner claimed the view, but historian William Frassanito credits Timothy O'Sullivan as the photographer and argues that the body was moved to this spot before the exposure was made.
