A shallow, unfinished grave near the center of the Gettysburg battlefield, captured in July 1863 just after the fighting ended, offers a blunt look at how the dead were handled in the battle's first days. The negative sleeve credits the image to T. H. O'Sullivan, and it was made as a stereograph, with two halves meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The pictures were made with wet collodion on glass, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate before it dried. Views like this were sold to a public eager to see the war's aftermath up close.
