Few photographs from the battle show the dead as plainly as this one, which records Confederate soldiers lying where they fell near the middle of the Gettysburg battlefield. The glass negative dates to 1863 and is credited on its sleeve to Alexander Gardner, whose team photographed the field in the days after the fighting in early July. Wet collodion plates had to be coated, exposed and developed almost immediately, so each image required considerable effort under hard field conditions. The negative is part of the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection and remains a stark record of the battle's cost.
