Lying where they fell, these Confederate soldiers were, according to the original caption, killed by Union artillery fire from the batteries on Round Top during the fighting at Gettysburg in early July 1863. Photographers such as Alexander Gardner's team followed the armies to the field soon after the battle, and they recorded the dead before burial crews moved them. The image survives as a wet collodion glass stereograph negative, a format that was meant to be viewed in pairs through a stereoscope. Earlier cataloging credited Gardner, but that attribution has since been questioned, so the photographer remains uncertain.
