Made on the right of the battle lines at Gettysburg, this view was meant to show how hard the fighting had been in that sector. The negative is a wet collodion glass stereograph dated July 1863, produced in the days after the battle ended on July 3, when photographers moved across the field recording its aftermath. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, whose team worked at Gettysburg that summer. Views like this, taken while the ground still bore the marks of battle, are among the early photographic records of a major Civil War engagement.
