The gateway to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, pictured here in 1865, marks the entrance to the burial ground laid out for Union soldiers who died in the battle of July 1863. Abraham Lincoln spoke at the cemetery's dedication on November 19, 1863, when he delivered the Gettysburg Address. The image was made as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, but that attribution is now considered outdated.
