The Pennsylvania National Cemetery sits on the hill where Union dead from the July 1863 battle were gathered for burial, and it was here that Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address during the dedication ceremony in November 1863. By 1913, the fiftieth anniversary of the battle, the grounds had become a place of pilgrimage for aging veterans of both armies. The photograph shows the cemetery as it looked a half-century after the fighting, when rows of soldiers' graves were already well established and the site had taken on its lasting role as a memorial.
