The gatehouse at the entrance to the Gettysburg cemetery is the subject of this stereograph, made in 1863 as the town was still recovering from the battle fought there that July. Its two glass negatives, one for each eye, were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, so the stone entrance appears to stand out in three dimensions. The pair was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a photographer who documented the battlefield that year, but that attribution is now listed as uncertain. Views like this one, taken as the cemetery was being laid out, show how the Gettysburg dead and the town's grounds were being shaped into lasting memorials.
