The gateway to Gettysburg National Cemetery, captured on a glass negative dated July 1865, shows the burial ground two years after the battle that filled it. The cemetery was laid out after the fighting of early July 1863 and dedicated that November, when Abraham Lincoln gave his address there. The wet collodion process used for this negative required photographers to coat and expose plates on site, which made battlefield and cemetery work of the period slow and demanding. Earlier caption books credited Alexander Gardner, but that attribution has since been revised.
