Taken from the cemetery in July 1863, this view shows the town of Gettysburg in the days after the battle fought there on July 1-3. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a fragile process that required photographers to coat and expose each plate on the spot. It was made as a stereograph, meant to be seen as a pair through a stereoscope. The negative was once attributed to Alexander Gardner (1821-1882), the Scottish-born photographer known for his battlefield work, but it is no longer credited to him.
