This view is titled as the headquarters of Gen. George G. Meade, the commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, who took charge of the army only days before the fighting at Gettysburg in early July 1863. The wet collodion glass negative is a stereograph, meant to be seen as a pair of images that create depth when viewed through a stereoscope, a popular parlor device of the period. The collection once credited the picture to Alexander Gardner, the Washington photographer who documented the battlefield that summer, though that attribution has since been questioned. Photographs like this one helped Americans at home picture a battle they could not otherwise see.
