Few pictures on this board show the Chambersburg Pike itself, the road Lee's army used to approach Gettysburg from the west, and this stereograph records a spot tied to the commander's presence there in 1863. Made as a pair of glass plates using the wet collodion process, the image preserves the look of the battlefield town in the months after the fighting of early July. Its catalog record credits the work to a photographer, Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is listed as a former one, so the maker's identity remains open to question. Visitors comparing it with other Gettysburg views will find that stereographs like this were made to be seen through a viewer, which gives the scene a depth that flat prints do not.
