A stereograph of the headquarters of Gen. George G. Meade on Cemetery Ridge, the spot where the Union commander directed the defense during the Battle of Gettysburg in early July 1863. Meade had taken command of the Army of the Potomac only days before the fighting began, and his position on the ridge became the center of the Union line on the third day. The image was made as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to prepare and expose plates on the spot, and the picture was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
