Set on the Gettysburg battlefield, this photograph shows the full-length equestrian statue of Gen. George Gordon Meade, who commanded the Army of the Potomac during the battle in July 1863. Meade took command only days before the fighting began, and his decisions on Cemetery Ridge helped hold the Union line over three days. The bronze was made by sculptor Charles Grafly and dedicated in 1896, part of the wave of monuments that veterans and states raised across the park in the decades after the war. The caption card gives no date for this print, so the photograph itself can only be placed in the years after the statue's unveiling.
