Meade is the subject here, shown as a portrait of the Union general rather than a scene from the field. A Pennsylvania native and West Point graduate, he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, and his decisions there secured his place in the battle's story. The record gives only a date range of 1860 to 1880, so the print likely comes from the years after his fame grew, when engravers produced portraits of Civil War commanders for books and periodicals.
