Photographed around 1864, this carte de visite shows Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade, who took command of the Army of the Potomac just three days before the battle of Gettysburg. The card was issued by McAllister & Bro. of Philadelphia, a studio that produced many portraits of Union officers, which families collected and traded during the Civil War. Meade's defense of the Gettysburg line drew wide praise in the North, and cards like this one show how such portraits served as keepsakes and public displays of support on the home front.
