Winfield Scott Hancock, the Union general, sits here in a three-quarter view, facing the camera in his uniform, a detail that sets this studio portrait apart from the many battlefield and group images of the war. Hancock rose from a brigade command to lead the Second Corps, and his stand at Gettysburg in July 1863 helped hold the Union line on Cemetery Ridge on the battle's first day. The print was issued by Campbell Photo Service of Washington, D.C., a studio that served officers and officials during the war. Hancock's reputation for steadiness under pressure gave his image wide appeal among Northern viewers.
