Oliver O. Howard sits for this half-length portrait in the uniform of a major general, the rank he held when his XI Corps reached Gettysburg. Howard had lost his right arm at Fair Oaks in 1862, and on the first day of the battle he took over direction of the field after John Reynolds was killed. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting cannot be tied to a specific occasion, but it fits the wartime years when officers often had portraits made. After the war Howard led the Freedmen's Bureau and helped establish the university that bears his name.
