Oliver Otis Howard, shown here in uniform, lost his right arm at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862 and went on to command the Union XI Corps. The caption card gives no date for this portrait, but the uniform and pose place it in or after the Civil War. On July 1, 1863, after Gen. John Reynolds was killed early that morning, Howard took command of Union forces at Gettysburg, and his corps was soon caught in a difficult fight north of town. After the war he led the Freedmen's Bureau and helped found the university in Washington, D.C., that carries his name.
