Turned toward the left and shown from the shoulders up, this chromolithograph presents Robert E. Lee with the calm, composed bearing his admirers later praised. Printed sometime between 1860 and 1900, the color portrait belongs to a wide run of inexpensive lithographs that circulated in the decades after the Civil War, when Lee had become a symbol to many white Southerners. He led the Army of Northern Virginia and surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox in April 1865, then spent his last years as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. Portraits like this one helped shape how Americans remembered him.
