Among the many Civil War portraits of Confederate commanders, this carte de visite stands out for its subject: James Longstreet, the Georgia-born officer who rose to lead the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. Cartes de visite like this one were small albumen prints mounted on card, sold cheaply and collected widely during and just after the war, so a head-and-shoulders study of a famous general would have circulated among soldiers' families and civilians eager for images of the men in the news. Longstreet fought at Gettysburg in July 1863, where his assaults on the Union lines have been debated ever since. The title was supplied by Library of Congress staff, and the date range reflects the uncertainty about when the portrait was made.
