This engraving presents Gen. John Bell Hood as a bust portrait set within an oval cameo, with his face turned slightly to the right. Hood commanded a division at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, when his Texans and Alabamians attacked the Round Top area, and a shell fragment shattered his arm during the fighting there. He later lost a leg at Chickamauga and commanded the Army of Tennessee in 1864. Portraits like this one circulated widely after the war, when Confederate officers were often remembered in print, and the "O'Neill, N.Y." imprint places it among the New York commercial prints of the period.
