Reynolds, commander of the Union I Corps, is shown here in a three-quarter length view facing left. He was killed on the first morning of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, while positioning his troops west of the town, and his death left the Union army without one of its most respected field commanders at a critical moment. This halftone is a later reproduction of an 1897 mezzotint by Max Rosenthal, made when the Civil War was being commemorated in popular print. Its dot pattern shows how such engraved portraits were adapted for mass-produced books and periodicals in the early twentieth century.
