Taken in May 1869, this seated, three-quarter-length portrait shows Robert E. Lee in the last full year and a half of his life, after he had left military command to serve as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. The sitter is turned to the right in a formal studio pose typical of the period. Lee had commanded the Army of Northern Virginia through the Gettysburg campaign, and by the late 1860s many Southerners and Northerners alike regarded him as a symbol of reconciliation, which helps explain why his portraits were so widely copied and sold.
