Lee sits three-quarter length and faces right in this May 1869 portrait, a few years after he had surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox in April 1865. By then he was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, a post he had accepted in 1865 and held until his death in 1870. The pose is calm and formal, which fits his postwar image as a dignified educator rather than a field commander. Lee disliked sitting for photographers, so portraits from these years were among the most widely circulated images of him in the South and North alike.
