Richard Stoddert Ewell appears here in a bust portrait turned to the right, wearing his Confederate uniform. He led a corps in the Army of Northern Virginia, lost a leg at the Second Battle of Bull Run in 1862, and returned to command the Second Corps at Gettysburg the next summer. Portrait prints of officers were commonly sold to the public during the war, so this image reflects how Confederate leaders were presented to civilians. The record gives only a broad date range, and its caption details are older and unverified.
