Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, commander of the Union I Corps, was shot and killed on the morning of July 1, 1863, as he moved troops west of Gettysburg to meet the Confederate advance. This picture reproduces a pen-and-ink drawing, so it shows an artist's rendering of him rather than a photograph taken from life. The caption card gives no date, so when the drawing was made remains uncertain. His death at the opening of the battle made him one of the war's most mourned Union officers, which helps explain why his likeness was widely circulated.
