The record for this pencil drawing on gray paper shows Union general John Fulton Reynolds at the moment of his death. Reynolds commanded the Union I Corps and was killed early on July 1, 1863, shot while directing his troops into the fighting west of Gettysburg, a loss that deprived the Union army of one of its most respected officers. The record dates the sheet to July 3, two days after the event, so the artist probably worked from eyewitness accounts rather than from life. The soft pencil on tinted paper fits the portrait and battle-scene conventions of the period.
