Pencil sketches from 1863 rarely record a single death as directly as this one, which marks the fall of Maj. Gen. John Fulton Reynolds on the first morning at Gettysburg. Reynolds, commanding the Union I Corps, was shot while directing troops near Willoughby Run on July 1, and command of the corps passed to Abner Doubleday. The subject list also names Lysander Cutler, John Buford, Solomon Meredith and Lucius Fairchild, along with James Jay Archer, the Confederate brigadier captured that afternoon. Together the names show how quickly the fighting west of town drew in the cavalry, the Iron Brigade and the commanders who shaped the battle's opening day.
