Waud drew this scene at the edge of Gettysburg, where fighting on July 1, 1863, spilled into the town's streets and yards. The title points to a particular danger of that day: men firing from the windows and outbuildings of ordinary houses, which turned every fence line and back lot into a place of cover and fear. Waud, a staff artist for *Harper's Weekly*, worked on the field and sent sketches like this back to be engraved, so the drawing offers a firsthand view of how the battle looked to soldiers moving into town. The pencil and white highlights on brown paper give it the quick, reportorial feel of his battlefield work.
