This watercolor records the capture of a Confederate brigade on the first day at Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, by the 6th Wisconsin, the 95th New York, and the 14th New York State Militia, also known as the 84th New York. Its inscriptions say it was made by patients at a U.S. Army general hospital in New York and presented by Surgeon Alex B. Mott, who had served with the Army. Conrad Feitag signed the painted scene, and the drawing's sentimental framing, with its soldiers and flags, reflects how wartime communities often honored the men who had fought and been wounded.
